The Freusburg is a 950 year old castle. In fact, parts of the building might be even older than that, since the afforementioned 950 years are only the timespan since its first appearance in the city chronicles. Although numbers like these make one think in terms of dungeons and dragons, it contains a fully-featured, modern youth hostel with 210 beds. It is located on a high hilltop near the Village of Kirchen, in Germany. The nearest big City is Siegen, about 30 kilometers away. The castle is within a nature preservation area, and the scenery is very beautiful. It is mostly surrounded with forest. The downside is, this makes it harder to reach. There is a train station in Kirchen, but you will need someone to drive you up to the castle unless you're a well-trained sportsman. We will make sure that there will be some kind of shuttle service to the castle. Inside the building, we have more than 10 multi-purpose rooms that we may use for all kinds of events. There are 3 four-bed rooms, 11 two-bed rooms, the rest are six-bed rooms. Rooms are lockable, we can hand out two keys per room. Bedsheets and Linen are included, no need to bring your sleeping bag. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed. The staff of the youth hostel is experienced with fantasy/filk and live action roleplaying conventions, so there won't be any unpleasant surprises. If you want to know more, and see some photos of the interior and the surroundings, take the guided photo tour through the castle.

  • If you're coming by car ...

To get to the Freusburg, you first have to go to Siegen. Siegen can be easilly reached through Autobahn A45, which goes North to South. At Siegen, the Autobahn crosses the B62. Leave the Autobahn at Exit Siegen, and take the B62. Stay on the B62. The B62 goes up and down, and curves around lots of hills, and through several small towns. Just outside the city limits of Kirchen, you need to take the right "one way" road up the hill. At the time this page was written, some of the uphill roads were under heavy construction and the way up changing every few days, depending on which roads are closed, so the description ends here. This will hopefully change until August. We will make sure to put up signs so you won't miss the right intersection :) For a bigger overview, please try our interactive routefinder in the maps section of this page.

  • If you're coming by train ...

The nearest DB (german railway company) train station is "Kirchen(Sieg)". Click here (English Language) or here (German Language) to find out what your best connection to Kirchen is. If you're of the adventurous kind, you can try and take a walk up to the castle. This will take you approximately 45 minutes, without luggage. So, we recommend our shuttle service. Please send us an eMail and tell us in advance if you need to be picked up, and when you are going to arrive. We will also post a phone number that you can call in case your train is late, or things run differently than you thought. Please keep in mind that the DB update their timetable twice a year. The next update is scheduled for June, 9th. Don't forget to check if any of your train connections are affected!

  • If you're coming by airplane (within europe) ...

There is no large airport near the castle. If you're flying within europe, try to get a flight to Köln or Düsseldorf, and continue your trip by train from there. This is the easiest and shortest way. See above for instructions how to find the right connections.

  • If you're coming by airplane (intercontinental flighs) ...

If you're planning to visit Eurofurence from overseas, you'll propably be very limited in the choice of your destination airport. If possible, you should try to get a flight to one of the northern or western airports (Frankfurt/Main, Düsseldorf, Hannover) and avoid destinations in the south or east (Berlin and Munich). If you are unsure, take a map and see which airport lies closest. (You can use the online routefinder on this page, and use the Tools/Distance function). Short-distance flights within germany usually don't pay off. In any case: Take your time, don't rush things. If you can, schedule your arrival in germany one or two days before the con begins. Jetlag is going to hit you like a hammer, and you will be exhausted from the flight. We recommend that you get a hotel room at your flight destination, and recover from the trip, and then take an early train to Kirchen on Thursday. The convention starts in the afternoon, and it's more fun to arrive early and relaxed rather than in the middle of the night and dead tired. The train ride will take another few hours, depending on where you landed. If you plan to take Melatonin to fight the jetlag, bring it with you, since you won't get it in germany without a prescription. Your travel agency should be able to look up a train connection to Kirchen for you. Of course you can directly consult the official DB search engine and ticket service. They sell tickets internationally. However, we believe booking the tickets through your local travel agency will be safer. If you need any help, dont hesitate to contact us.

Finally, here is a detailed map of the vicinity of the Freusburg as it was given to us by the youth hostel. The remarks were in german, so we added red markers and translations to the most important places. Click on the map to download a printable high-resolution version of the same map.
